An ‘astounding’ quality of service
Declan, from Northern Ireland, has been on service with Sciensus since January 2021 for prostate cancer care. Each week he receives blood tests at home, meets with his consultant then receives chemo at home and a toxicity call around 10 days later to check how he is feeling.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 52,300 cases diagnosed each yeari. It starts in the prostate gland which is about the size of a walnut and found at the base of the bladder in men. Prostate cancer does not usually cause symptoms in the early stages.
Supporting a difficult journey
Declan says that after spending many years in retail and selling products all over Ireland, he’s been impressed by his experience of the ‘mind blowing efficiency’ of the Sciensus team.
“I’m used to dealing with all types of customer service. Sciensus are on the end of the phone 24/7 for any problems and they astound me with their quality of service”, he said. “When I found out my cancer had metastasised it was a terrible shock and one of the saddest moments in my life, but Sciensus has minimised the upset this has created.
“The nurse arrives on a Thursday and usually text the time they will be arriving. My nurse is exceptional and has become one of the family. My treatment is a 3-hour process, but I can spend those hours on my own sofa overlooking the sea, with nice music on and the comfort of family members being around.
“The nurse helps us go through what is unpleasant with ease. At the beginning of my journey, the vaccine for COVID-19 had just been discovered and I went along for my jab but it was my second chemo just a couple of days later. I had an unforeseen reaction and the Sciensus nurse arranged for a transfer to hospital just in case; it was safe, seamless and he dealt with it perfectly.”
Declan says that as he lives 40 miles from the hospital, the cancer treatment he receives from Sciensus at home minimises the inconvenience to himself and his family of having to travel – “The treatment just happens, then it’s done.”
Extremely professional – and decent and friendly too
Declan says that the Sciensus team members he deals with are extremely professional and also nice, decent and friendly. “I would recommend Sciensus without hesitation,” he said. “With a diagnosis of cancer and all that goes with that, you’re on a journey for the rest of your life. It’s not always pretty but Sciensus make it as pleasant as possible for people.
“During my treatment I get to chat with the nurse if there is interesting stuff in the news or listen to music together while they are doing their paperwork, and it’s such a comfortable place to be. The nurse makes the whole situation so much easier to bear and cope with.”
