Sciensus services reduce stressful hospital visits for cancer patients

Dr Nick MacLeod is a consultant clinical oncologist working in Glasgow at Ross Hall Hospital and the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

I’ve worked with Sciensus for the past five years now. The main services they provide for me are blood monitoring and administering chemotherapy at home, as well as patient liaison.

For me, one of the key benefits of patients receiving treatment at home is that it removes the stress of hospital appointments. The prospect of having chemotherapy can be scary and hospitals can be daunting for patients. Even finding parking on a hospital visit can be stressful, besides the worry of getting stuck in traffic, which means that patients can arrive for appointments already feeling anxious. Access to home treatment helps to reduce that stress.

As Sciensus is a UK-wide company, the patient can continue with treatment even if they’re going away from their home for a period. Some of my patients have used this service when going on holiday in the UK.

The one-to-one nursing care Sciensus provides is also great for patients. Nurses can have a chat and a cup of coffee and listen to patients’ concerns. If the same nurse sees a patient a few times they can develop a bond you might not get when seeing a number of different nurses in a hospital.

The staff are very professional and using Sciensus has been a very positive experience. I would recommend it.
