Sciensus’ new depot allows for increased capacity and improved environmental and social impact
Sciensus opens new depot in Hemel Hempstead to replace a smaller facility at Kings Langley. Operations began at the end of 2024, with an official opening held this month. Matt Hix, Business Development Manager – Logistics, explains how the new depot is helping Sciensus on its environmental, social, and governance journey and how Sciensus can scale-up operations in the future.
The move to Hemel Hempstead has allowed Sciensus to provide a modern, state-of-the-art facility, with enhanced welfare facilities for staff. The new site’s more central location helps Sciensus’ environmental, social, and governance journey by cutting stem mileage. Matt added: “It helps our drive to reduce our impact and be as efficient as possible.”

Capacity for growth
Once Sciensus’ regional distribution centres have delivered to depots including Hemel Hempstead, the orders are sorted into van routes. Vans are then dispatched from the site directly to patients’ homes. The Hemel Hempstead depot makes 168,400 deliveries a year and vans dispatched from there cover 696,000 miles a year. As a larger facility, there is scope to increase capacity by adding more van routes.
The new depot gives Sciensus capacity to grow as an operation in the area as an operation while also providing the right staff welfare facilities and a depot to be proud of.
Matt added: “Our customers can be safe in the knowledge that by entrusting Sciensus they will continue to receive the high level of service that we set throughout our excellent network.
“Sciensus is the market leader in medication delivery, and this depot ensures our facilities are fit for purpose going forward. We are a class-leading organisation and we have ensured this and all other depots are built with compliance in mind. We are confident with our legislative and licensing requirements and know we can ensure product integrity from Hemel Hempstead. At Sciensus, we always want our staff to have the right welfare facilities and the right type of site to operate out of. We constantly analyse if we have depots in the right locations, and assess when is the right point to introduce a new depot, which is what we have done here.”
